This purchase was made from the advice of Gavin, an instructor for Ragnarok Tactical. There is a problem in Canada where we have magazine restrictions, the idea is that with less bullets in the magazine you can shoot less people. Unfortunately, this has been proven multiple times as this is not the case. Whether it be by just using more guns (New York Reload), just reloading more, or using illegally obtained magazines; this does not make the public safer. A person who has decided to kill someone isn’t going to say; “Hey wait a second, I can’t use this regular capacity magazine because it’s illegal, let me use this smaller one to commit murder.” The byproduct of all this is that in Canada, magazines designed for a rifle are limited to 5 rounds and pistols are limited to 10 rounds. Enter the LAR AR-15 pistol and its magazines. With this, Canadians can fit up to ten bullets in their magazines, with one shortcoming. These magazines are made for 10 rounds so they are about half the physical size of a standard magazine.

In order to bypass this problem, we use couplers by connecting two magazines together with the bullets facing the same direction. You get something with roughly the same shape and size as a standard USGI mag. For this purpose, I have seen two styles;

The first is the replacement base plate: take the base plate off two magazines and replace them with what looks like a slice from a wheel of cheese , which gives the two mags the desired size and shape.

Or you can do what I use, which is the Caldwell AR-15 magazine coupler. I bought mine as a 2-pack for $12.99 at Al Flaherty’s in Toronto. Installation was easy, all I had to do was take two magazines and place them in the coupler and tighten the screws. You’re good to go, you don’t have to mess with the base plates, springs, or other internals of your magazine. Even with the extra bulk, they still fit quite well in the HSGI Taco Pouches.

If you’re looking for a cheap but effective way of carrying more ammo in a easy to handle package, look no further than the Caldwell AR-15 Magazine Coupler!
